Soak Up Your Vitamin D

The weather is warming up, which means it’s time to ramp up your Vitamin D levels! That’s right, Vitamin D is naturally made in your body when you expose your skin to the sun—that’s why it’s called the sunshine vitamin.

Depending on the season, weather, time of day, and your skin color, your body can absorb enough sun to make Vitamin D in as little as 15 minutes. But don’t break out your tanning oil! Sunlight’s good for Vitamin D levels, but too much can still increase your risk for skin cancer. Slap on some sunscreen, cover up, and/or head into the shade once you’ve gotten enough sunlight to boost your Vitamin D levels.

Where else can you get your Vitamin D? It’s fat soluble and naturally found in fish oils, fatty fish (swordfish, salmon, tuna, and others), cheese, egg yolks, and certain mushrooms. You may find Vitamin D in fortified products such as milk or yogurt, ready-to-eat cereals and orange juice. You can also buy ready-made vitamin D supplements. Talk to your doctor to find the best option for you.
It’s key to avoid low vitamin D levels, as it can lead to thin and brittle bones, as well as high blood pressure, insulin resistance (a precursor to diabetes), and depression. So how do you know if your vitamin D is low? The only way to know for sure is to have your Vitamin D levels checked by your doctor.

Recommended Dietary Allowances:

Men: 18-70 years of age: 600 IU/day Women: 18-50 years of age: 600 IU/day
