Popeye was on to something!

Popeye used spinach to get strong and healthy and so can you! There are a number of different ways to enjoy this superfood. In the store you can find it raw, frozen or canned. At home you can enjoy it raw or cooked—no right or wrong way to eat it! I love to put spinach in my morning smoothie to help add a nutritional punch to start my day.

Why is spinach considered a superfood? Just 1 cup of raw spinach packs in tons of protein, calcium, iron, magnesium, potassium, Vitamin A, and folate. Spinach is also a great non-heme (non-animal) source of iron. Tip: to help your body better absorb non-heme iron, pair with a fruit that’s high in Vitamin C. Try adding strawberries or mandarin oranges to your spinach salad.

So how can you add spinach into your day? Here are 5 ways.

  • Include 1 cup of spinach in your scrambled eggs or omelet
  • Add spinach to your sandwich at lunch
  • Make a large dinner salad using spinach and top with a protein, nuts, fruit and olive oil dressing
  • Sautee 1 cup of spinach with 1 tsp olive oil, 1 tsp garlic and 1 tsp lemon for a great side dish
  • Use spinach as one of your vegetables in a no-crust quiche
