Position Overview:

The Technical Specialist supports the Mass Spec laboratory with technical instrumentation and assay expertise by facilitating the purchase, acquisition, programming, operation, training and troubleshooting of laboratory instruments. This individual may also assist with managing the daily operation of the laboratory. Hours are Tues-Sat 2PM-10:30PM

Required Education, Skills and Experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree in clinical laboratory science (CLS), medical technology (MT), chemistry, or a biological science or equivalent
  • The ability to communicate effectively, multi-task and work under pressure is the key to success in this position, which also requires extreme attention to detail and a commitment to achieving consistent customer satisfaction
  • Must also have a working knowledge of computers and Microsoft Office products to include:
    • Microsoft Windows OS
    • Outlook
    • Word
    • Excel
  • The ability to uphold HIPAA compliance is mandatory
  • Strong skills in good laboratory practices
  • Excellent communication skills and ability to work closely with others
  • Must be able to work independently

Preferred Education, Skills and Experience:

  • 5 years of laboratory experience using complex laboratory instrumentation for ICP-MS, LCMSMS, then GCFID, NMR
  • Experience in toxicology
  • Experience in Mass Spec

Essential Functions/Responsibilities (other duties may be assigned):

  • Responsible for assigned laboratory instrumentation automation improvements and maintenance with strict adherence to regulatory requirements
  • Investigates, recommends, and performs training on laboratory instrumentation and assays
  • Recommends and implements processes for improving or maintaining quality, efficiency, and workflow
  • Coordinates instrumentation purchases and installations
  • Works with IT to set up and validate interfaces for laboratory equipment
  • Programs, troubleshoots, repairs and calibrates laboratory equipment
  • Compiles all required documentation for instrument set up and validation
  • Writes and reviews validation documentation, training checklists, operating procedures and preventive maintenance documents
  • Coordinates the schedule of and assures performance of routine and non-routine maintenance, maintains inventory of parts, and coordinates service with outside vendors for assigned laboratory equipment
  • Trains other laboratory personnel in operation, programming, maintenance and troubleshooting of laboratory equipment and software
  • Trains other laboratory personnel in good laboratory practices as well as regulatory and quality guidelines
  • Continuously works to improve quality and efficiency of laboratory methods
  • Writes legibly and with complete documentation of all work performed
  • Sets priorities and meets deadlines in a fast paced and changing environment
  • Maintains expert knowledge of assigned laboratory instrumentation and assays including laboratory technologist duties
  • Adheres to the laboratory’s health and safety guidelines
  • Maintains a clean and safe working environment
  • Actively contributes to the team effort by volunteering to assist coworkers
  • Communicates with coworkers, vendors and clients with tact and sensitivity
  • Maintains confidentiality of laboratory information
  • Works on other projects as needed or assigned

Work Environment:
