Position Overview:

Responsible for financial management, productivity, quality and service, strategic planning, continuous improvement, staff development and management, procedures, and developing and implementing new services in the Testing Laboratory. Completes special assignments as assigned by the laboratory director(s) and manager. Responsible for technical and scientific oversight and/or direct supervision of laboratory personnel and maintenance of policies, procedures, and quality control practices to assure compliance with CLIA, CAP and other regulatory requirements within the assigned scope of testing.

Required Education, Skills and Experience:

  • Minimum education includes a Bachelor’s degree in one of the following: chemistry, human biological science, clinical laboratory science, or medical technology
  • Minimum of 5 years of experience performing high-complexity testing in a CAP/CLIA-certified clinical microbiology laboratory
  • ASCP certified (Microbiology)
  • In -depth knowledge of complex laboratory techniques, laboratory safety and quality assurance to support ongoing and future projects
  • Ability to communicate well through written and verbal means is required
  • Proficient with statistical and computer productivity software (i.e. Word, Excel, etc.) required

Preferred Qualifications

  • 1+ years of molecular diagnostics/molecular microbiology experience

Essential Functions/Responsibilities (other duties may be assigned):

Directs and coordinates laboratory activities to ensure that services are provided on schedule within quality and cost objectives

  • Establishes laboratory organization and process plans and delegates responsibilities, authorities, and accountabilities to appropriate staff
  • Creates development and training plans for supervisory personnel within the laboratory
  • Directs, coordinates, and oversees major unit projects to the best economic advantage of True Health Diagnostics LLC
  • Monitors and responds to monthly volumes, utilization, financial, operational and quality metrics
  • Collaborate with the Executive Team on any issue that affects the quality, performance, scaling, etc. of the scientific community of True Health Diagnostics.
  • Takes action on personnel and operational issues with urgency
  • Work collaboratively with and provide leadership to the other True Health business units
  • Designs laboratory workflow processes and efficient testing schedules to ensure timely delivery of test results
  • Supervises the laboratory personnel through continual general and direct supervision, interactive staff meetings, time management, and workload distribution
  • Accessible to laboratory testing personnel at all times when testing is performed to provide on-site, telephone or electronic consultation to resolve problems in accordance with policies and procedures established by the laboratory director or laboratory manager
  • Monitors the supply and reagent inventory to ensure the Laboratory is stocked with consumables
  • Assists with staying within budget parameters as well as reaching projected program goals
  • Monitors and responds to monthly volumes, utilization, financial, operational and quality metrics
  • Takes action on personnel and operational issues with urgency
  • Adhere to and uphold all applicable federal and state compliance regulations as well as True Health’s Code of Conduct and Ethical Responsibility, compliance policies and procedures, and applicable healthcare fraud, waste and abuse laws. Ensure adherence to these compliance standards among all True Health colleagues for whom I am responsible to manage and oversee.

    Manages human resource related functions

    • Provides timely performance feedback and completion of scheduled performance appraisals of supervisory personnel
    • Responsible for justification, interviewing and hiring of new employees
    • Develops an environment for personal growth, development and learning for employees by encouraging continuing education, special projects etc.
    • Actively coaches, mentors and develops employees
    • Ensures adequate staffing while maintaining appropriate levels of productivity, accounting for absenteeism
    • Responsible for justification, interviewing and hiring of new employees
    • Addresses and documents personnel and performance issues
    • Conducts individual performance reviews of laboratory personnel
    • Responsible for accurate employee timekeeping
    • Maintain absenteeism records
    • Develops an environment for personal growth, development and learning for employees by encouraging continuing education, special projects etc.
    • Actively coaches, mentors and develops laboratory employees

    Implements and supports True Health Quality Assurance Program and regulatory compliance

    • Ensures that all laboratory activities and operations are carried out in compliance with local state, federal, and governmental regulations and laws
    • Ensures documentation, correction, and follow-up of quality and safety events
    • Responsible for internal/external audits
    • Identifies opportunities for improvement and utilizes continuous improvement methods in problem-solving to achieve desired outcomes
    • Oversees troubleshooting and documentation of equipment, tests, results, etc.
    • Establishes and reviews the Laboratory Quality Control program and enrollment and performance of proficiency testing
    • Updates department protocols, method procedures, and training and competency forms
    • Evaluates the competency assessment of testing personnel as defined by CLIA and assures that the staff maintain their competency to perform test procedures and report results promptly, accurately, and proficiently
    • Evaluates and documents the performance of individuals responsible for moderate or high complexity testing at least semiannually during the first year the individual is employed
    • Verifies testing procedures and the establishment of the laboratory’s test performance characteristics, including precision and accuracy of each test and test system

    Oversees training of employees and trainees

    • Ensures adequate training of personnel including documentation of training
    • Identifies training needs of all laboratory individuals
    • Meets with and/or trains employees and trainees

    Creates and maintains a patient service focus within the laboratory

    • Coordinates the training of employees in customer service, diversity and communication skills
    • Revises test information as needed
    • Serves as a professional role model, working cooperatively with other work units to seek out mutually agreeable solutions to problems

    Participates in planning to execute developmental endeavors in the laboratory

    • Participates in technical development group efforts through interactive meetings and discussions that promote process improvements and technology developments
    • Implements process improvements to current methods
    • Evaluates and validates new assays

Work Environment:

The employee is occasionally required to reach with hands and arms; climb or balance; stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl; and smell. The employee must occasionally lift up to 50 pounds and/or carry objects weighing up to 25 pounds. The employee is required to perform repetitive motions, including reaching above the head, and typing. Specific vision abilities required by this job include peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus.
