Bruised, But Not Broken.

Clinical Health Consultants from True Health Diagnostics are trained to be good motivators. But sometimes, a patient motivates us.

A few weeks ago, I had my first conversation with a new patient—a 79-year-old gentleman. Unfortunately, some patients let their age discourage their efforts and simply care less about improving their health. Not this fellow: he wanted to know exactly how every single lab marker affected his health. When we got to his inflammation markers, we discussed reasons his hs-CRP level might be high, including injury. This patient shared with me that he had in fact had a recent injury. Though it had happened more recently than his lab results, he told me had recently fallen and bruised his knee…while roller skating.

ROLLER SKATING. I paused, not sure I heard him correctly, and checked his age again. Yep, 79.

Images came to mind of my own uncles, even my father, on rollerskates! Not something I think I’ve ever seen – or ever will, for that matter. I can’t even remember the last time I have personally been on roller skates.

I said, “I’m sorry, did you say ‘roller skating?’”

The patient’s response: “Yeah, I was roller skating with a few nieces and nephews when one accidentally knocked me down. I’m bruised, but not broken.”

Bruised but not broken. Before we got off the phone, he asked me to wish him a happy birthday, as he turns 80 next month. I am inspired by his optimism and his vitality. How will I compare when I’m 80? How do I even compare now?

Have you fallen down, figuratively or literally, and stayed there too long before you realized you’re not broken? My challenges for you today:

  • Be thankful for the situations in life that could be worse, but aren’t.
  • Do something FUN and outside your comfort zone!
